When you experience a toothache, it is a likely indicator of a tooth infection. Symptoms of the infection can be identified as visible injury or swelling of the tooth, sensitivity to temperature, or pain in the tooth and gum. If you experience any of these symptoms, call us right away. In order to prevent the possible loss of your tooth and/or the spread of infection, you do not want to delay treatment. We reserve Same Day emergency appointments for our patients, which means that we usually can schedule your visit the day you call.
At the center of your tooth is pulp. Pulp is a collection of blood vessels that helps to build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or repeated dental procedures. Before the root canal is performed, local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, and relaxation medication may be administered to eliminate any discomfort. Then, the injured pulp will be removed, and the canal(s) will be cleaned and sealed. The root canal procedure, which normally is performed in about an hour, eliminates the infection and saves your natural tooth.
